Storybook Dads Location MapThe charity headquarters and editing centre is run from Dartmoor prison. Since 2003 we have been offering our editing service to other prisons. All they need to do is purchase the digital recorder send their recordings to us at HMP Dartmoor, where we edit them and send back the completed story on a CD. We have three editing suites comprising of fourteen editing stations. Six staff, three civilian volunteers and eight selected prisoners edit all the stories that come in. We are also pleased to include Storybook Mums and we are currently editing for four women's prisons.

The recording project is run by different departments in our member prisons. Sometimes it is run solely for the chance for the prisoners to record a story for their children, thereby improving family ties. However, it is often linked to education and can be mapped across key skills or other literacy, IT or social and life skills courses. Although most prisoners prefer to read a story from a book, some prisons (including Dartmoor) run creative writing schemes whereby the parents can write their own story. At Dartmoor we use graphics software to produce a book to accompany the audio story thereby enabling the absent parent to have an an input into their child's literacy development. The learning outcomes from the Storybook Dads project are myriad and far reaching. The reading of the story is at the heart of the experience and is the primary focus; however, the learning that takes place is immeasurable.

2007 has continued to be a year of substantial growth. Several new prisons have joined us and the table below shows that we produced over 1650 stories at Dartmoor.

We help some prisons set up their own editing facility so that they can provide the service for their own prison population. As well as advising on equipment and delivering the initial training we also visit each one at least once a year to deliver supplementary training.

The number of stories produced by these editing suites are as follows:

HMP Lincoln = 98 ..........HMP The Wolds = 178........HMP Guys Marsh = 120..............HMP Foston Hall = 102

HMP Gartree = 205 ...... HMP Glen Parva = 450 ......HMP Peterborough = 60 ..............HMP Wealstun = 125

HMP Durham = 60.........HMP Stafford = 290 ...........HMP Winchester = 125

This takes the total of stories produced at Dartmoor and the other editing suites to 3,463. Given an average of two children per family this takes the total number of beneficiaries of the CD project to 10,389.
